Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals)

A few nights ago, I caught the second half of a television special on National Geographic Channel about the Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals) of Chihuahua, Mexico. Fascinating! And, I want to live there. More specifically, in them. Or at least visit. But as far as I can tell the caves are not open to the public and are insanely hot inside, allowing a person only a handful of minutes to observe the wonderland within. So so inspiring and beautiful. What a dreamland.

This has to be one of the most amazing natural formations in the world. I'm surprised I've never even heard of it. Have I been living in a hole my whole life? Here are some photos from the article I linked to above, click this link to read more about this stunning and inspiring work of art mother nature made for us. Incredible.

The biggest, littlest surprise!

I've been waiting to share our good news with the world, but now, it's time! Drumroll please...

We have a baby boy on the way! I am about 25 weeks along and doing great. We are so very excited for his arrival in the spring of 2012.

With this huge life change also comes other necessary changes, one of which is the relocation of my studio. At the current time, I am lucky enough to have my studio conveniently tucked away inside the second bedroom of our tiny 1920's bungalow. But now, seeing as how the baby will need a room of his own, we will be relocating my studio into our little office nook. It will be a tight squeeze, but with some smart design and thoughtful organization, it will (hopefully) become a nice, cozy, artful, inspiring workspace.

CHK Jewelry will soon be put on hold for this transition, so if you have any jewelry needs - act fast! I plan to temporarily close up shop after the holidays, through the new year.

It's Monday again! Well, 55 minutes ago it was. I'm getting to my posting later than expected tonight!

This weekend was my favorite show of the year, ICE-Atlanta Holiday Shopping Spectacular! I had so much fun, saw some special old friends and made some wonderful new ones as well. There was a great showing of artist's and crafters at the show, and as always I was both impressed and inspired.

Here are a few pics from my booth at ICE this weekend. It is always a work in progress, but this time I was pretty satisfied with how it came out. The only thing missing is a sign! I'm still brainstorming on the make and design, but hopefully it will make it's debut at my next show.

So, I've been MIA lately because of all the newness that's been happening. It's time to do a brief summary of everything that's happened in my personal life during the last several months.

I was last at DSW in January (Long time, I know - but I have to do my part in keeping my shoe lust at bay) and I saw these gold oxfords. At the time I was shopping for tough winter boots, as I was leaving the next morning for a trip to snow covered New York City. I passed on them at the time, but have been dreaming of them ever since (in addition to lusting after them online). Today, I walked into DSW and, voila! There are my shoes - waiting for me - in my size - the LAST pair! It was meant to be. I feel like a little kid in them, it is wonderful.

Back from vacation and back on track!

I am finally home and settled in after almost two weeks in Savannah! I spent the first week of my time working for two of my most favorite divisions of SCAD - shopSCAD and Working Class Studio. While I was in Savannah I was lucky enough to visit the studio of Marcus Kenney, one of my very favorite SCAD artists. His working is simply amazing and his studio equally enchanting. I had been daydreaming for years about visiting his studio, and I am truly grateful to Amy of shopSCAD for letting me tag along with her on her visit. xoxo

A day and a half at-home-breather was then followed by yet another trip to Savannah. Destination: one week beach trip with some of my closest friends to a beach house on the lovely Tybee Island! We spent our days in the ocean and our nights listening to records at the house. We celebrated my bestie JA's 30th birthday on the 2nd and went downtown for the fireworks on River Street for the Forth of July. We had a blast and I can't wait to go back! Here's a picture of our cozy little beach cottage:

As some of you may or may not know, I recently got engaged to my long-term (and very handsome) boyfriend, Andy! We set a date for October 1st, so now that I'm back it's time to get started planning and ironing out all of the details of our very DIY wedding. We have a venue, a date, and a rough guest list, so now's the time to combine these elements with my ever-growing folder of inspiration to make it happen! Updates to follow as they come together. xoxo

Today I made this ring - I hope you like it! It is hand fabricated from sterling silver and the "stone" is actually made of vintage glass. It almost looks like an opal, but way more durable, great for everyday wear. Pretty pretty!

I only have a limited quantity of these glass stones, so get 'em while you can! I can make them in any size. I am planning on making matching necklaces and earrings as well, so check back soon!

Some Love Puppies

If you know me at all, you know that I love my fur babies more than anything. So, here's a few of my favorite pictures of my love puppies, Zoe and Hank. Zoe is a brindle boxer mix that we adopted from PAWS animal rescue, and Hank is a blue nose pit bull from Rescue Me! animal rescue. Both rescues are amazing adoption programs based in Atlanta. Love these puppies bunches. And they love each other too. So sweet!

New "Segment" - How It's Made!

A lot of people don't know the in's and out's of jewelry, specifically metalsmithing. I know I didn't before I started the Metals and Jewelry program at SCAD! There's so many weird tips and tricks and steps to each piece that you never even think about or knew existed. So I've decided to start a new "segment" on How It's Made - a look into the handcrafted studio. I hope that y'all will find it informative and enjoyable. :)

I'd like to start exploring the methods and madness we jewelers use to create our craft. I've chosen to highlight a new project I've been working on recently. It is a fairly basic sterling silver ring with a bezel-set Mexican Fire Opal. I added a few embellishments such as beaded wire to dress up the setting and double half-round wire to add more interest to the ring band. I hope you like it and please let me know what you think!

These are the two stones I started out with. This segment is going to focus on the stone on the left, which is a Mexican Fire Opal. I'm still working on the setting for the Quartz stone on the right, I'll post more about that later.

First you have to form your fine silver bezel wire, which will end up being the component that holds the stone in place. To do this, you simply shape it around your stone to form a snug fit, with no gaps.

With your bezels formed, you then set them up for soldering. At this point we will be closing up the butt joint where the two ends of the bezel wire meet.

Soldering the bezels closed with an acetylene torch, applying even heat to the piece until the metal gets hot enough to melt the solder.

The next step is to solder the bezel onto a flat piece of sterling silver, this will form the base of the stone mounting. For these settings I used scrap silver left over from a previous project (hence the drill holes).

Aaaand soldered! If you look close, you can see the solder line, it shows up as the bright line along the joint between the bezel and the silver sheet.

The next step is to pierce around the bezel to get rid of the excess silver sheet. You can choose to saw directly beside the bezel, but in this design I wanted to have a decorative ridge, so I left some space between my saw blade and the bezel.

Pierced and filed smooth. This is now the future home of the Mexican Fire Opal.

I chose to create a decorative bezel for this piece, so I needed to form this beaded wire around the bezel to make a snug fit.

Set up for soldering.

Soldering, again with an acetylene torch, this time on a tripod to ensure even heating. This will join the beaded wire to the bezel and to the flat base of the setting.

And soldered! Now it's all in one piece.

Now to make the ring band! I chose to use some double half-round wire to add some interest to the band, instead of having a run-of-the-mill round or half-round band.

This may look weird, but shaping the band so that it forms a straight butt joint is the easiest way to ensure a solid solder seam, with no gaps. Now we are ready to solder.

Now the ring band is soldered (sorry I forgot to get a picture) and it is time to form it into a circle.

I used a hammer to form the ring band into a circular shape.

Then I filed a flat spot in the top of the ring band, to form a solid seat for the bezel to be soldered onto.

And again, I forgot to take pictures of my soldering setup (sorry), but this is a photo of the ring band after I soldered it onto the bezel setting.

One of my oldest, dearest friends sent me a text message the other day to say that she had found a special treasure while unpacking at her new home in California. Lo and behold - it is a Cuyler Hovey-King Original Necklace - circa 1991!

New Year, New Job, New Listings

Hi Friends,

2010 ended on a bittersweet note for me, as I had to help close down the shop where I had worked/managed for the last 4.5 years. I decided that instead of letting it get me down, I would face this uncertainty with an attitude of hope and positivity - that this change, although forced, will be a positive one.

I'm not yet sure if I am brave enough to try to give it a go with my jewelry full-time, but I am going to make a genuine effort to keep producing new work and see where it takes me. So wish me luck!

So, I've totally been slacking lately. Call it what you will, but I took a little break from blogging and my studio to get mind wits about myself again and to hopefully get re-inspired.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting back in the game and creating new things - especially for the ICE-Atlanta Holiday Shopping Spectacular 2010! I received my acceptance notification email last night and am super stoked to be included in this event - especially with this year's show being the first TWO day holiday show ever! ICE Holiday is always my favorite show of the year, so now it's double the awesome and double the fun - hell yeah!

My plan is to start early and have an over-abundance of jewels on hand for the show; I'll be posting regular progress updates here as well as snapshots of my new work. I'm hoping to take my new line in a slightly different direction for this show and hopefully develop it into an exciting and cohesive line of jewelry for Spring 2011. I think this will also be my self-imposed deadline and (realistic) goal for my catalog launch.

New work from last night!

I worked in my studio for a bit last night and this is what I came up with. The Tassel Necklace is made of a vintage watch fob ribbon given to me by my main squeeze, Andy. I created the tassel with a bunch of vintage gold-tone chain and topped it off with a vintage blown glass bead and a vintage rhinestone bead. On, it reminds me of a tie or an award - fun! Also made a new Chompers Charm Pendant to replace the one that went to shopSCAD last week, and another giant pendant necklace - this time it's a mini sewing machine! This trinket is also from 1970's Hong Kong. LOVE

I just listed them in my Etsy shop! I'm still not sure about the Chompers Charm Pendant or the Sew Cute Necklace, I might revise them a bit later on this week. Any feedback would be great to hear! xo

I just had a family come into my shop. Mom, Dad, and a sweet little boy about 7 or so with Down Syndrome. He kept repeating this over and over and it was the sweetest thing I've ever heard. It is so pure and full of love at it's simplest I though I should share it with everyone.

I'm currently working on expanding my limited production line with hopes of self-publishing a small catalog to distribute to potential retailers. My goal for Fall 2010 is to grow my wholesale business (in addition to my online retail business) by selling to small boutiques and shops across the country. If any of you out there know of any potential shops that would be a good fit for my jewelry, please let me know!

Here is a preview of a couple of the items that will be filling out my catalog. My favorite of all is my new tiny chair cufflinks! I'm hoping that these will inspire a modest-sized men's jewelry line. I've wanted to launch one for quite a while and hopefully nailing down this production line will give me some time to expand my horizons a bit into men's jewelry.

Also, I added to my Teeny Chair Collection with a pair of simple chair earrings. I think these will be a nice complement to the paired down simplicity of the rest of the collection.

Unfortunately, I've realized I am a horrible catalog designer!! If any of you know of any good graphic design people please send them my way, I need help!! :) xoxo

Flea market find!

Yesterday I went to a great local monthly flea market and scored this super cool vintage medical cabinet from the 20's. It has like a million layers of paint under the final teal top coat which adds to it's vintage shabby goodness. I've been looking for something to occupy this corner ever since our pup, Hankenstein, no longer needed to be crated and this fits the bill perfectly! The artwork on the walls is so very special to me. The original painting on the top left was painted by my very talented step-sister Andi; she has a wonderful new Etsy shop that can be found here. The needlepoint below her painting is a vintage needlepoint of a kitty with a bow around it's neck that I purchased in a vintage shop in Whidbey Island, Washington. The painting on the right was also a purchase made from a thrift store on Whidbey Island; it is an original oil of an outdoor snow scene. The little critter that also sits on the ($1 at the thrift store) shelf is an artist-made mini Alpaca that I also purchased at the same thrift store. The vintage Thermos' were a purchase made at the yard sale find of the century, earlier this year. All in all I am happy with how this room is coming together. :)

New banners & New earrings!

I went ahead and took the plunge and updated my website and Etsy banners to match my new blog banner. I am quite pleased with how they came out - bright, crisp, and cheerful. I'm thinking more and more that I will probably hand-write and scan in the "KittenPicnic" title and replace the block font (even though it's super cool) on my blog banner. Takes some time though, so it will probably take a minute for me to get around to it.

Although I should be cleaning house, tonight is going to be a dedicated bench night, as I am working up some new designs for Tiny Chair Earrings and Cuff Links; they will be available in both sterling silver, bronze, and possibly gold-plate. I also have a couple more embroidered pendants that need to be finished so hopefully I can get to that tonight as well. So much to do! Hope to have everything finished and uploaded soon!

Last night I also made some new earrings which I hope to be able to upload to Etsy sometime tomorrow. I will post an update here when everything is ready. In the meantime, here are some preview photos!

So it took quite a bit of figurin' since I'm no whiz at Photoshop or web design, but I got my new blog design up and ready to go this evening! I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out and I hope you like it too! :) The only thing I'm thinking about changing is the "KittenPicnic" font; I might end up writing it in cursive like my logo design on my other sites...I'm actually thinking about changing all of my banners (Etsy and website) to the same image, so I'd love to hear any comments or feedback you may have. Last night I finished my new business cards! I have (embarrassingly) been meaning to get to this for quite some time now, as I've had the same cards for about 4 years. I decided to simplify a lot and include product images on my cards this time, instead of the vintage collage-y theme I used in my previous cards.The front is simply a detailed product shot, and the back shows the jewelry on a model and also my contact information. Special thanks to my friend Meghan of Pleasantly Plump Knits for taking the model photos with her magical iPhone!

Last night I also got started on my new blog banner to replace the temporary one you see above. I'm hoping to have it finished and uploaded to the blog this evening. I'm using images from a vintage greeting card given to me by my Grandma. It has - you guessed it! - kitties on it and it's super cute. It's actually where I pulled the inspiration and images from for my kitty tattoo on my upper arm, as seen here:

Kim is AMAZING! Hands down, amazing. She took elements and color schemes from the vintage greeting card to create this original composition. Her attention to detail, line work, and color sense are stunning. Can't wait to get my next tattoo from her - in September hopefully!

As a side note, I had this for lunch today and it was surprisingly delicious, although I don't think it will hold me over until dinner.

Summer's Resolution

ok ok ok...take # 1,000 on keeping up with my ding dang blog. Really I have the best intentions, I promise!

So I've decided to switch gears with my blog a bit since I don't seem to be able to post with any consistency. This also coincides with my new Summer's Resolution to make at least one piece of jewelry - or something handmade, home improvement project, etc - per day. Hopefully I can surpass this daily goal and crank out more than just one thing, but the main goal here is productivity and accountability.

I'm going to start now by posting some photos of the new jewelry I've been working on. I tend to hoard any new stuff I have in hopes of making it better...or something...well, I'm not really sure why I do it, I just do.. But hopefully this blog will turn into a mix of daily postings of new works as well as anything of interest I happen to stumble upon and want to share.

I have just started a new line that changes direction pretty drastically from my metal work but I am pretty excited about how things are turning out. It is a line of large embroidered pendants combined with vintage chains. They are like giant crazy crafty bling necklaces and so far, I'm pretty fond of them. They are all one-of-a-kind and you can view them in their entirety in my Etsy shop.

Just for fun I've also been making some vintage beaded earrings. They are all made with sterling silver ear wires, vintage beads, baubles, and chain and are priced at $38. I am currently working on re-designing my website and found a neat template that is pretty easy to work with and was really close to what I had initially designed in my mind. Now I just need to find someone a tad more adept than I am at web stuff to tweak it a little more and then the new site will be all set! Check out the work in progress here!

I also happened upon these beautiful men's rings by Custom Jewelry by Johan. Men's jewelry is usually so boring to me, but these rings are a nice breath of fresh air. The craftsmanship is impeccable, the materials are interesting, and the designs are masterfully refined. All of his work is made to order and is completely customizable!

Yard sale gold mine!

Yesterday the boys and I went yard sale-ing around the neighborhood. It was a beautiful day and I found so much good stuff! The yard sale find prize of the day goes to the 20 vintage Thermos' I found at a neighbor's sale!! I can't wait to use them to decorate the dining room. I think it will be a really neat addition to my retro design theme for the room.

At the same sale I also found this awesome vintage metal wheat lamp. I think the yellow and green will be a nice compliment to the color I plan on painting the dining room. All I need to find is a cute shade.

I also found this vintage paint by number at the same sale. I thought it was so charming I had to have it. When I took it up to add it to my quickly growing pile of things to buy, the owner said that he was actually the one who had painted it for his Mom when he was 9 years old!

(And then I totally dorked out and asked him to sign the back. He agreed that I was really dorky and obliged)

At another sale (of the same girl I just bought my new dining chairs from) I found this set of vintage canisters for the kitchen.

The littlest one for tea is my favorite.

Today I picked up my new chairs! I am really stoked about them and think they look great with my new table. I think the only thing left for the dining room is a fresh coat of yellow paint, a small shaggy rug, and some art! New table wants chairs!

Today I finally moved my new dining table into the house (it had been on the front porch collecting pollen until I made room for it) and it's looking great!

I found 2 vintage lucite-back chairs online and am really stoked to see how they look with the table. I can't wait to pick them up tomorrow! Here's a photo:

Today while I was working in the yard, I accidentally cut a flower stalk off of one of the plants I was pruning (I wish I knew what kind of plant it was!) so I stuck it in a vintage beer stein and voila! centerpiece! It is accompanied by a vintage pair of monks sugar and creamer set I found for $5 at a local vintage shop.

The next step is to slap some paint on the walls. I initially painted the dining room white (3 coats worth), but I've come to decide that it feels very unfinished to me and I really hate it. I'm leaning towards yellow, so we'll see.

Off to make some earrings while Andy watches the Braves game!

Meet Thomas:

He stares at me while I'm sleeping. My boyfriend Andy had to swat him away from my face the other morning because he was afraid Thomas was trying to steal my soul.

So, I haven't blogged in a while. I've been busy and haven't really had much to talk about, but I just finished a fun DIY project that could be blog worthy...

I just finished my new jewelry box! It is made from an old tool box that I added hooks to and mounted on the wall. I am so excited about how it turned out - and I think the red looks great with the new color Andy and I painted our bedroom this past Sunday.

I've been playing around with the idea of redesigning my website and all other print/visual materials for Cuyler Hovey-King Jewelry - I'm super bored with my current design. So far, I've designed this blog banner (I had none to begin with...) and the banner for my Etsy shop. It's still in the trial and error mode, so please let me know what you think - I'm totally open to suggestions! Once I get a good feel for which way I want to proceed, I'll being working up a theme for my website. Dang, it sure did take some work to remember what little I did know about Photoshop to make this simple thing!

Just listed on Etsy! This precious pendant is hand fabricated out of sterling silver and various vintage components. Materials include: a vintage plastic mini deer, wood dollhouse flooring, vintage button, and resin set in sterling silver. Pendant hangs from an 18" vintage brass chain. One of a kind! Thanks to Meghan for coming up with the sweet name!
